By creating a bootable install drive, you can perform clean OS X 10.8 installs, install it on separate partitions, and install OS X Mountain Lion on Macs that don't have internet I can't trust Apple products after being burnt for the third time. Install Mountain Lion to an external hard drive (not the Time Machine backup, unless you've created a separate partition for it). Apple looked at mine and said it was not ready to fail, despite the SMART status and it has been fine for a few years. S.M.A.R.T.
