I run one in my 15 inch mid 2012 MBP and it's made a huge difference. Installing a new OS won't cause it to fail the drive unless the drive was already dying and the extra use just pushed it over the edge.

Another google tells me I have almost a billion sectors on my 500 GB hard drive so 4 does not seem like too big a deal from a layman's perspective. Not a bad thing IMHO. You are likely to get bad writes and make things worse. However, I put a Crucial m4 256GB SSD in my MBP a month or two ago, and I cannot be happier with the performance since then. have a peek here If you have to get a new drive (and you do), I would definitely consider the Crucial or Samsung SSD, because you cannot go wrong.

Most of the problems I hit were stupid Now you'll see one disk: your primary Macintosh HD disk but we want to install it on Yosemite HD so click Show all disks… Pick Yosemite HD and away we go! Hell, I could of predicted that. Get a back up and then replace the drive. We re-imaged the machine with Mountain Lion and there were absolutely no SMART problems. Here are some common problems with the Alexa speakers and how to fix them.
